Independence Day; Saturday Morning; smiling
Sherron Killingsworth Roberts

Statement of Purpose
The poems were born from exploring the relationships of mothers and daughters. Both Independence Day and Saturday Morning attempt to capture the quiet momentum and uneasy disequilibrium between the existing roles of motherhood and childhood. The poem, smiling, helped navigate the death of my mother to ovarian cancer. Though common and therapeutic, these poems elucidate the unique paths women must traverse through the circular stages of childhood, mothering, and motherlessness. This poetry tends to explore the challenges of identity and loss, and examines the tenuous relationships of life and family.
